In ABA therapy, having parent involvement is key! We may be the experts in ABA, but parents are the experts in their children. That’s where parent training comes in! It’s not uncommon for a BCBA or RBT to recommend behavior interventions that worked in the clinic for parents to try out at home only to learn that they just aren’t feasible- for whatever reason!
It wasn’t until I had a child of my own that I realized how closely we have to think about the million other things on a parent’s plate that interfere with implementing all the ABA strategies. We only have each child for a small portion of their week. This means that parents, not therapists, are really key players in the progress their child makes. Without parents fully involved and on-board with what is being taught in ABA the progress tends to move at a slower pace.
ABA is not a lifetime therapy.
Our number one goal is to work ourselves out of a job! We will not always be there, so it is essential that parent learn the basics of ABA that they can take with them after we are gone.
Insurance companies are now seeing the importance of parent involvement and many times require weekly parent trainings as an essential part of the treatment plan.
